July 9: Counseling Military Veterans
This will be a short presentation of the many aspects of dealing with veterans, especially returning combat veterans from the current wars. References to previous wars are used to develop an understanding of the multiple features that affect veterans, such as family, employment, regular military status versus National Guard/Reserves status. The trauma of war which creates adjustment disorders, PTSD and intensifies existing personality disorders is briefly explored. As more females serve in the military, female veterans have emerged with different areas of concern such as sexual trauma. Also, the number of tours required of a soldier has changed the scope of therapy.
